I also loved how the writers used that state of inversion to demonstrate compassion, understanding, friendship and finally romance. What I loved about this film for starters was the story, it was so brilliant and out of the box, it blew my mind.
Patema and Eiji meeting looks like fate because it is revealed that their father/guardian were actually very good friends so their friendship was almost destined to happen.

The humans at the time tried to get energy out of the core of the earth and as a result mother nature retaliated in a dramatic way, I didn’t really understand the science behind it but the result was some people who were inverted hence the movie title, there were people whose sense of gravity was to something other than the earth. Patema inverted is more a Sci-Fi than a romance I’d say, it depicts a world that pushed technology too far, it is a futuristic movie.
